MEDICAL REVISION COURSE FOR FINAL YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS(INCLUDING OSCE)

Brief overview:
This intensive 2-day revision course is specifically tailored to assist final year medical students prepare for the medical component of the exam (EMQ and date interpretation papers, and OSCE) in June 2010. Taught by a faculty comprising of Consultants and Registrars, this course will provide the student with a focused revision of pertinent medical topics; highlight the important areas, and; enable them to perform clinical examinations (OSCE) efficiently and present the findings to the examiner in a systematic, concise and logical manner. This course is particularly suitable for students who have done reasonable amount of prior revision but wish to consolidate their knowledge, streamline their thought process, and obtain salient points and essential exam-preparation tips from the clinicians. At the end of day 1, there will be mock data interpretation exam. This mock exam, which is optional, will be conducted in exam conditions and will simulate the real exam.

Topics:
The course, amongst others, will cover the following areas:
  • Cardiology (IHD, arrhythmias, heart failure, valvular heart disease and endocarditis)
  • Nephrology (ARF, CRF, glomerulonephritis)
  • Respiratory medicine (pneumonia, pleural effusion, obstructive lung disease, lung tumours and respiratory emergencies) 
  • Haematology
  • Endocrinology (DM, HT, adrenal and pituitary diseases)
  • Rheumatology
  • Autoimmune and connective tissue diseases
  • Gastroenterology and nutrition
  • Infectious diseases (meningitis, travellers’ diarrhoea and gastroenteritis)
  • Neurology (CNS vascular phenomena, dementia, epilepsy, spinal cord disorders and Parkinson’s disease)
  • Emergency medicine
  • Spot diagnoses of various medical conditions
  • Data interpretation (ECG, ABG, various biochemical and haematological investigations, radiological images)
  • Tips to solve EMQs

On the second day of the course, the students will be divided into small groups and clinical examinations (OSCE style) will be demonstrated by doctors on volunteers and/or patients in the out-patients department. There will also be opportunities for students to practice their examination skills.
