SURGICAL OSCE COURSE FOR FINAL YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS

Brief overview: 
This intensive one-day OSCE revision course is specially tailored to assist the final year medical students of University of Sheffield prepare for their OSCE exam in May 2009. Taught and demonstrated by practicing surgeons working in Sheffield and beyond, this course will consolidate the student’s knowledge whilst addressing any weaknesses, provide a focused revision of pertinent surgical topics, and enable the candidate’s ability to perform clinical examinations (OSCE) slickly and present the findings to the examiner in a systematic yet concise manner.
 
Topics:
The course, amongst others, will cover the following areas: 
Colorectal malignancies
Inflammatory bowel diseases
PR bleed
Abdominal emergencies
Hernias, scrotal and groin swellings 
Peripheral vascular disease and gangrene
Varicose veins
Leg ulcers
Lumps and bumps, including neck lumps
Skin cancers
All joint examinations 
Hand examination 
Investigations and surgical care
Numerous surgical and orthopaedic spotters 
On the afternoon of the course, the students will be divided into small groups and clinical examinations (OSCE style) will be demonstrated by surgeons on volunteers. There will also be opportunities for students to practice their examination skills.
