SURGICAL REVISION COURSE FOR FINAL YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS

(Run in Conjunction with Department of Surgery, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff)

Time:

25th April 2009 (Saturday) - 0830 hrs till 1745 hrs

26th April 2009 (Sunday) – 0830 hrs till 1730 hrs

Lecture Theatre 1 and Out-patient Department

Brief description:
This intensive 2-day revision course is specially tailored to assist final year medical students prepare for their exam in summer 2009. Taught by practicing surgeons, this course aims to consolidate the student’s knowledge whilst addressing any weaknesses, provide a focused revision of pertinent surgical topics, and enable the candidate’s ability to perform clinical examinations (OSCE) slickly and present the findings in a systematic yet concise manner.

Topics:
The course, amongst other topics, will cover the following areas:
  • Acute abdomen and abdominal emergencies
  • Colorectal malignancies
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Pathologies of the gall bladder and pancreas
  • Hernias, scrotal and groin swellings
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Varicose veins
  • Leg ulcers
  • Neck lumps and thyroid disorders
  • Breast disorders and malignancies
  • Urological conditions
  • Surgical principles of pre-, peri- and post-operative care (including consent)
  • Principles of wound management
  • Blood transfusion
  • Data interpretation and interpretation of X-rays, CTs, angiograms and other radiological investigations
  • Overview of joint replacement procedures
  • All joint examinations
  • Hand examination
  • Communication skills
  • Numerous surgical and orthopaedic spotters

On the second day of the course, the students will be divided into small groups and clinical examinations (OSCE style) will be demonstrated by surgeons on volunteers and/or patients in the out-patients department. There will also be opportunities for students to practice their examination skills.

Both days: £45
