Surgical Revision Course for Final Year Medical Students
 
TIME:  19th April 2008 (Saturday): 0830 hrs till 1745 hrs                       20th April 2008 (Sunday): 0830 hrs till 1700 hrs

VENUE: Wallace Lecture Theatre, Main Building, Cardiff University

 
COURSE PROGRAMME

20th April, 2008 (Sunday)

 
8:30: Day 2 start
ORTHOPAEDICS (PART 1)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Basics of hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Principles of fracture management and bone healing
  • Management of fractured neck of femur
RADIOLOGY
  • Common pathological plain radiographs of the chest, abdomen, hands and long bones
  • CT scan images of brain, chest and abdomen
  • Angiogram images
 1100 – 1115: Break
 
ORTHOPAEDICS (PART 2)
  • Important principles and techniques in examining hands and major joints
  • Nerve injuries of the hand, brachial plexus and lower limbs
GENERAL
  • Spot diagnoses of common surgical presentations
  • Sample EMQs and SBAs
  1300-1345: Lunch Break
 

CLINICAL SKILLS DEMONSTRATION 

Candidates will be divided into small groups and will go through different clinical stations (30 mins each) where the lecturers and tutors will demonstrate on volunteers all the clinical examination topics (see below) covered during the course, address issues related to EMQs and pertinent queries:
  • Clinical demonstration of examining abdomen and abdominal organs
  • Clinical demonstration of examining inguinal hernia and scrotal swellings
  • Clinical demonstration of examining varicose veins and leg ulcers
  • Clinical demonstration of examining cutaneous lumps and malignancies
  • Clinical demonstration of examining lymph nodes
  • Clinical demonstration of examining breast and breast lumps
  • Clinical demonstration of examining thyroid and neck swellings
  • Clinical demonstration of examining hip, knee and hand joint
  • Clinical demonstration of examining shoulder, back and GALS screen

1700 HRS: END OF COURSE
